Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 5 tbsp soy sauce (divided)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (divided)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • ½ cup water or beef broth
  • 2 bell peppers (red and green), sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (divided)
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef: Combine sliced beef with 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp cornstarch, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, cornstarch, and water or broth. Set aside.
  3. Cook the beef: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a skillet over high heat. Add marinated beef in one layer and cook until browned (about 2–3 minutes per side). Remove from skillet.
  4. Stir-fry vegetables: In the same skillet, add remaining oil and stir-fry bell peppers and onion for about 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  5. Combine: Return beef to the skillet and pour in the prepared sauce. Stir to coat and cook for an additional 2–3 minutes until thickened.
  6. Serve: Garnish with green onions and serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
