  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Warm the water and milk in a microwave-safe bowl. Add sugar and yeast; let foam for 15 minutes.
  2. Mix in the beaten egg, salt, butter, and 2 cups of flour until thick but smooth. Stir in the remaining flour until just combined.
  3. Knead lightly on a floured surface, shape into a ball, and let rise in an oiled bowl covered with a towel until doubled (about 1.5 to 2 hours).
  4. Heat oil to 370°F in a Dutch oven. Roll out dough to about 17×11 inches and cut into squares.
  5. Fry squares in batches for about 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Transfer to paper towels and dust with powdered sugar before serving warm.
