  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage (hot or mild)
  • 1 small yellow onion (diced)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 cups kale (chopped)
  • 5 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups tortellini (refrigerated or frozen)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium-high heat, brown the ground sausage and diced onions for about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess grease and add minced garlic; sauté for an additional minute.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook until lightly golden (1–2 minutes). Add dried basil, oregano, cayenne pepper, hot sauce, mustard powder, pepper, red pepper flakes, and salt.
  3. Pour in the chicken broth while scraping the pot’s bottom to deglaze. Gradually mix in heavy cream and bring to a boil before reducing to a simmer.
  4. Add chopped kale and tortellini; simmer for 3–5 minutes until heated through.
  5. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed before serving hot.
